Navajo Nation Fair

Mark and I found out the Navajo Nation Fair isn't like most fairs. There is more on the outside of the fair then inside as you will see with the pictures. First, a little about the fair. It is held in Window Rock, AZ which is the capitol of Navajo Nation. This year was its 66th year. It is about a week long. We are not going to the parade which was on Saturday (you will see from the pictures why and the road closes at 6:00 AM). We went with Merrill on Friday.

The fair is known for Jumbo Smoked Turkey Legs!

Everyone we told we were going to the Navajo Nation Fair said about getting a huge turkey leg or seeing people walking around eating a huge turkey leg, and we said "What?" now we know!

For about 4-5 miles, (in two states, Window Rock is right on the border of New Mexico) both sides of the road. And this is for the parade, and this was Friday morning.

Right along the major highway!

In the fair they do have the fair things like rides, animals (mostly sheep), vendor's, and food.

Some different things schedule were powwow, wild horse race, fry bread contest, etc.

Some of these were selling sweet corn, fry bread, snow cones, pop (we are on the west side of the Mississippi, soda for those of you on the east side)

It was very interesting and we hope to go next year. We would have stayed longer and walked around on the outside but of all things it started to rain.

But for my family we all know the second weekend in September, 95% of the time it rains.

Blue Moon

Maybe all of you might already know that August had a blue moon this year. I decide to try take pictures at differnt times during the night. So here it goes.............Once in a Blue Moon!

 

This one I took out our bedroom window about 4:00am or so!

Cutting Firewood New Mexico Style

First with cutting wood (any where) get up early and get going!

What a sunrise!

 

After driving one hour. First stop to find dead trees.

You can only cut dead tress and you need a permit that is good for one year and a half of cord of wood each load.

Keep going!

Keep looking!

Finally a tree to cut!

After theses pictures Mark did the cutting. This tree was 150 yards from the trailer. After this they decide no more then 100 feet back from the trailer.

So you set back and enjoy the scenery.

The load of wood! After 1 hour of driving, 4 hour of cutting and carrying it, and 7 stops to find wood to cut, and another hour to come home!

Some loads of wood will be sold to cover the cost and other loads will be giving away to those who need it but can't pay for it!

But you have to carry the wood. About 80 yards and through loose sand. Not as easy as back in PA. No tractor to skid out with, no log splitter. No big trees, the biggest one we cut was 14 inch in round.

Also you just walk out the back door back in PA.

Mark and AD have decide to go cut wood on Friday mornings for a while. Please pray for their safety as you think of it. Also another prayer request is to keep Marco and Leah in your prayers. They are our son and daughter-in-law.
